Alaskan Arctic Adventure Tours Take an opportunity to view seals, whales, birds, arctic fox and polar bears on a tour to the furthest point north in America in the heated comfort of our tracked off road RV vehicle. . Yes! During the summer months as well as winter you may be able to walk on ice bergs. Whales, seals and walrus are commonly seen when the ice breaks up. We leave the City of Barrow, Alaska and travel along the Chuckchi sea to Point Barrow . This is the furthest point north in America. During the warmer months, usually there is a large variety of birds in this area as the Chuckchi and Beaufort seas meet at this point. The churning of the currents creates a heaven for birds and seals to feed. Quite often when Ice Bergs are present, coupled with the seal population Polar Bears may be citied even in the summer months. Walrus may also be seen in this general area. With this tour binoculars are provided for your use. A certificate for having attained the furthest point north in America, and a picture of any polar bear that we are able to photograph together is our gift to you. For those that come to photograph birds, opportunities begin in earnest with April's arrival of the Snowy Owls. The Parasitic Jaegers show up, along with about 200 other species of birds throughout the spring and summer. Steller's Eiders, Spectacled Eiders, King Eiders, Sabine's Gulls and Yellow-billed Loons are commonly found throughout the Barrow area. Ross's Gulls and Ivory Gulls are usually only seen in the fall (September and October). We utilize a spacious 4 wheel drive van, suitable for carrying your photo equipment and spotting scopes. The 4 wheel drive capability allows access to areas beyond the reach of the general public. Large windows are un-tinted, and the height advantage over other vehicles allows it to serve as a viewing platform. Our usual birding season is Mid-May thru first weeks of October. Although we are in the warmer months it is advisable to bring coats, gloves and hats as the arctic winds usually prevail. Tours are preferably limited to an 8 person maximum per van. This allows each guest a window seat and space for their equipment. Spring opens with the arrival of Snowy Owls, and following within a short time Eiders. Swans, Geese, and the rest of the Ducks are right behind them. Parasitic Jaegers , gulls, loons, and Terns become more common as the weather warms up to 30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. With the warmer weather the variety increases to include around 150 or more birds including, Sandpipers, Phalaropes, and Plovers. Steller's Eiders, Spectacled Eiders, King Eiders, Sabine's Gulls and Yellow-billed Loons are commonly found throughout the Barrow area. Ross's Gulls and Ivory Gulls are usually only seen in the fall (September and October). Having lived in the Arctic for over 20 years we realize that prime areas change from year to year. However, a proven producer for many years has been the fresh water lake area, a few miles south of Town. In this same area is what we locals call South Pad Road. This road runs several miles to the Chuckchi Sea. With 4 wheel drive capability we are able to check out bays and inlets beyond the end of the road. An additional prime area is Cake Eater road which runs out about 13 miles to natural gas wells. Tundra grasses and ponds are on both sides of the road allowing good viewing out both sides of the Van. North of town are additional sites in which to view birds. Generally during the winter we may be able to view Arctic Fox as well as caribou. This is a specialized tour for photographers that want the ultimate adventure. As the tourist season ends my true love of wildlife photography is to be shared with the few that wish to brave the Arctic Weather. This tour is based on animal activity, thus they decide the hours we will be out doing our photography. I have found that early in the morning is the best time to go out and set up in known areas. If you really are serious about photographing a bear, plan on being here at least 2 days. This has to be a planned in advance event. I will be happy to advise you on clothing, and will assume you know about tri-pods, film and cameras. Also batteries are eaten by the cold so bring lots or at least a charger as they may not be available here.
