As we all know, Barrow was previously called Ukpeagvik by the Iñupiat who lived here in our little town. Whaling was a way of life for these natives and all that the whales provided with helped them carry out their lives, including supplying their food source and constructing their boats, homes, clothes, tools, art, and even providing them with oil. To this day, the Iñupiat continue with their centuries-long tradition, however presently, are limited to harvesting at most 24 whales per year. The iconic Whale Bone Arch here in Barrow is symbolic in it’s creation and conveys their deep connection to the arctic ocean and the life it holds.
